BSc (Hons) Product Design

The BSc Product Design course at Cardiff Metropolitan University has expanded my ability in a range of skills that I feel are essential to success in the industry. The projects I have completed aim to solve a range of different issues that many individuals tackle on a daily basis. The variation in products, and services, I have produced through my time at CSAD reflect on current issues in target areas, and how these can be solved with a simple yet innovative design approach. My mindset towards design focuses on the functionality of products, and how improving this may simplify everyday tasks to a greater standard. I believe that a good product reflects key user interaction without holding them back in any way. Therefore, simplifying a product as much as possible is key to achieving this. This approach to my design solutions is something I plan to take into the industry, to which I hope to practise and build upon in the years to come.

Mae’r cwrs BSc Dylunio Cynnyrch ym Mhrifysgol Metropolitan Caerdydd wedi ehangu fy ngallu mewn ystod o sgiliau sy’n hanfodol i lwyddiant yn y diwydiant yn fy marn i. Nod y prosiectau rydw i wedi’u cwblhau yw datrys ystod o wahanol faterion y mae llawer o unigolion yn mynd i’r afael â nhw’n ddyddiol. Mae’r amrywiad mewn cynhyrchion, a gwasanaethau, yr wyf wedi’u cynhyrchu trwy gydol fy amser yn CSAD yn myfyrio ar faterion cyfredol mewn meysydd targed, a sut y gellir datrys y rhain gyda dull dylunio syml ond arloesol. Mae fy meddylfryd tuag at ddylunio yn canolbwyntio ar ymarferoldeb cynhyrchion, a sut y gallai gwella hyn symleiddio tasgau bob dydd i safon fwy. Credaf fod cynnyrch da yn adlewyrchu rhyngweithio allweddol â defnyddwyr heb eu dal yn ôl mewn unrhyw ffordd. Felly, mae symleiddio cynnyrch cymaint â phosibl yn allweddol i gyflawni hyn. Mae’r dull hwn o ymdrin â’m datrysiadau dylunio yn rhywbeth rwy’n bwriadu ei gymryd i mewn i’r diwydiant, yr wyf yn gobeithio ymarfer ynddo ac adeiladu arno yn y blynyddoedd i ddod.

For my technical report I looked into current Esports peripherals and discovered a lack of focus for users with a claw style grips when using a gaming mouse. My final design is an innovative shape that reduces strain from the user’s raised fingers which improves comfort during competitive gameplay.

For my 5-week project, I developed a new lockbox for parcel deliveries for users with minimal external space. This product is aligned with the brand Ring and sits perfectly within their existing range. The product features a letterbox bracket that ensures vital ground space is saved for the owner.

For my FMP, I carried out the Design the Change Competition 2020 from Bolt Burden Kemp. I discovered a major lack in development for wheelchair push rim covers. My final design improves the user’s grip and ease of pushing the wheelchair which, in-turn, will reduce shoulder/ back pain over time.

My final push rim design is a standard aluminium push rim housed within an over-moulded silicone sleeve. To allow the product to fit into many different user personalities, the silicone can be manufactured in a range of colours to improve confidence and aesthetic satisfaction.
