BA (Hons) Textiles

I am a self-taught multifaceted hand embroiderer based in South Wales. All aspects of nature inspire me, especially the intricacies of plant life and animals, more so the strange and unusual. Incorporating sustainable products such as recycled pieces within my work is integral to maintain an ethical element to my practice. Alongside looking at sustainability by using solely repurposed and recycled materials, this highlights the need to respect nature and only use what is required to ensure the longevity of all species within nature.

Entitled ‘Protected Nature’, this design is a representation of how nature protects itself, through the exploration of 3-dimensional hand embroidery. The idea came from exploring highly magnified images of seed pods which act as the protective layer for the seed. This concept has inspired this design by encapsulating nature under this protective layer. The main chosen elements are oversized to express their fragility and include fungi, acorns, rosehips, and moss which adapt and evolve to survive. By ensuring nature can adapt within different environments this could help reduce humanity’s impact on the planet.

Viewing nature and its imperfections through the sections of the protective layer, these show unique snapshots of the multiple different perspectives of how nature is seen. The protective layer helps humans to understand that nature is fragile and that fungi and seeds are highly important to the planet’s development of new and existing ecosystems.

Rwy’n frodiwr llaw amlweddog hunan-ddysgedig sy’n byw yn Ne Cymru. Mae pob agwedd ar fyd natur yn fy ysbrydoli, yn enwedig cymhlethdodau bywyd planhigion ac anifeiliaid, yn arbennig felly’r rhai rhyfedd ac anarferol. Mae ymgorffori cynhyrchion cynaliadwy fel darnau wedi’u hailgylchu yn fy ngwaith yn rhan annatod o gynnal elfen foesegol yn fy ymarfer. Law yn llaw ag edrych ar gynaliadwyedd drwy ddefnyddio deunyddiau wedi’u hailbwrpasu a’u hailgylchu’n unig, mae hyn yn amlygu’r angen i barchu natur a defnyddio’r hyn sy’n ofynnol yn unig i sicrhau hirhoedledd pob rhywogaeth ym myd natur.

Teitl y gwaith yw ‘Protected Nature’, ac mae’r dyluniad yn cynrychioli sut mae natur yn amddiffyn ei hun, drwy archwilio brodwaith llaw tri dimensiwn. Daeth y syniad o archwilio delweddau wedi’u chwyddo’n fawr o godennau hadau sy’n gweithredu fel haen amddiffynnol ar gyfer yr hadau. Mae’r cysyniad hwn wedi ysbrydoli’r dyluniad drwy amgáu natur o dan yr haen amddiffynnol hon. Mae’r prif elfennau a ddewiswyd yn anarferol o fawr i fynegi eu breuder ac yn cynnwys ffyngau, mes, egroes, a mwsogl sy’n addasu ac yn esblygu i oroesi. Drwy sicrhau y gall natur addasu mewn amgylcheddau gwahanol gallai hyn helpu i leihau effaith dynoliaeth ar y blaned.

Mae gweld natur a’i amherffeithrwydd drwy rannau o’r haen amddiffynnol, yn rhoi cipolwg unigryw o’r holl ffyrdd gwahanol y gwelir natur. Mae’r haen amddiffynnol yn helpu pobl i ddeall bod natur yn fregus a bod ffyngau a hadau’n bwysig iawn i ddatblygiad ecosystemau newydd a phresennol ar y blaned.
