Kazimir Redraven

BA (Hons) Illustration

Kassius Kazimir Redraven (aka Khazi) is an illustrator born to two goths with darkness flowing through his veins. He is originally from London but was exiled for being too polite to people on public transport; he now resides in South Wales, where his friendliness is no longer punishable by law.

His work is often an exploration of the surrealistic quality of life through the medium of tacky cartoons that combines an underlying appreciation for, and active interests in, absurdist philosophy, the natural world, pop culture, and camp, darling. Coming from a working-class background, he uses the subversion of aesthetics from mid-20th century advertising and classical art (particularly the delicate realism of the Renaissance painters) in his work to demonstrate the arbitrariness and futility of such categorisations as ‘high’ and ‘low’ art and culture – he believes in the accessibility and freedom of illustration compared to other fields of visual art.

This series of paintings is based on the emotional turmoil of living through the pandemic, based on his own personal experiences – the underlying cocktail of fear, frustration, depression, boredom, anxiety, eventually evolving into new-found resilience. Through surrealist visuals depicting dreamscapes that are simultaneously familiar and alien, he aims to express the otherworldly feeling of living in such strange times.

Mae’n dod o Lundain yn wreiddiol, ond cafodd ei alltudio am fod yn rhy gwrtais i bobl ar drafnidiaeth gyhoeddus; erbyn hyn mae’n byw yn ne Cymru, lle nad yw ei gymeriad cyfeillgar yn drosedd bellach.

Mae ei waith yn aml yn archwilio ansawdd bywyd swrrealaidd drwy gyfrwng cartwnau di-chwaeth sy’n cyfuno diddordeb brwd a gwerthfawrogiad sylfaenol o athroniaeth hurt, byd natur, diwylliant pop, a champrwydd, darling. Mae Khazi, sy’n dod o gefndir dosbarth gweithiol, yn gwyrdroi estheteg hysbysebion a chelf glasurol o ganol yr ugeinfed ganrif (yn benodol realaeth gain peintwyr y Dadeni) yn ei waith i ddangos mympwyoldeb ac oferedd categorïau o’r fath fel celf a diwylliant ‘uchel’ ac ‘isel’ – mae’n credu yn hygyrchedd a rhyddid darlunio o’i gymharu â meysydd eraill celf weledol.

Mae’r gyfres yma o baentiadau yn seiliedig ar darfiad emosiynol a brofwyd yn y pandemig, yn seiliedig ar ei brofiadau personol ei hunan – y coctel sylfaenol o ofn, rhwystredigaeth, iselder, diflastod a phryder, sy’n esblygu yn y pen draw i fod yn wydnwch newydd. Drwy ddelweddau swrrealaidd sy’n darlunio tirluniau sy’n gyfarwydd ac yn estron ar yr un pryd, mae’n anelu at fynegi’r teimlad arallfydol o fyw mewn amser mor rhyfedd.
