BA (Hons) Product Design

Sustainability, ethical practice and empathy are the main drivers behind my design approach.

Designing in a sustainable and ethical way is becoming the new normal, but it is important that this approach to how we produce and consume products is not a fleeting trend. I personally seek out products that are sustainable and ethical and, as a young designer, I feel it is vital that this message is continually reinforced. Sustainable and ethical design is indispensably important for our planet. By adopting these practices as a designer I am essentially contributing to the future health and look of the world.

An empathetic approach to design encourages creative connections with our surroundings and the end-user of our products. I have come to truly appreciate how fundamental an intelligent understanding of people – their emotional, intellectual and physical needs – is to being a good designer. Empathy allows me to discern what an end-user desires from a product and encourages me to be a better designer.

My university education has cemented these passions for me, alongside my greater appreciation of the importance of the details. The fine-tuning of a design idea is where the beauty lies and I am constantly considering, critiquing and appreciating design elements in everything I see and use. I love the fact that I can be a part of what makes something useful also beautiful. These are the aspects of design that I already feel incredibly passionate about and will take with me into my professional practice.

Cynaladwyedd, arfer moesegol ac empathi yw’r prif gymhellion tu ôl i’m hymagwedd i at ddylunio.

Mae dylunio mewn ffordd gynaliadwy a moesegol yn dod yn normal newydd, ond mae’n bwysig nad tuedd ddiflannol yw’r ffordd rydym yn cynhyrchu ac yn defnyddio cynhyrchion. Yn bersonol chwiliaf am gynhyrchion sy’n gynaliadwy ac yn foesegol ac, fel dylunydd ifanc, rwy’n teimlo ei bod yn hanfodol bod y neges hon yn cael ei hatgyfnerthu’n gyson. Mae dylunio cynaliadwy a moesegol yn annatod bwysig i’n planed. Drwy fabwysiadu’r arferion hyn fel dylunydd, yn y bôn rwy’n cyfrannu at iechyd a golwg y byd yn y dyfodol.

Mae ymagwedd empathetig at ddylunio yn annog cysylltiadau creadigol â’n hamgylchfyd a defnyddwyr terfynol ein cynnyrch. Rwy wedi dod i werthfawrogi o ddifrif pa mor sylfaenol mae dealltwriaeth ddeallus o bobl – eu hanghenion emosiynol, deallusol a chorfforol – i fod yn ddylunydd da. Mae empathi yn gadael i mi ganfod beth mae ei eisiau ar ddefnyddiwr terfynol gan gynnyrch ac yn f’annog i fod yn ddylunydd gwell.

Mae f’addysg yn y brifysgol wedi cadarnhau’r angerddau hyn i mi, ochr yn ochr â dealltwriaeth well o bwysigrwydd y manylion. Mireinio syniad dylunio sy’n dod â’i harddwch ac rwy’n ystyried, beirniadu a gwerthfawrogi elfennau dylunio yn gyson ym mhopeth rwy’n ei weld ac yn ei ddefnyddio. Rwy’n caru’r ffaith y gallaf fod yn rhan o beth sy’n gwneud rhywbeth defnyddiol yn brydferth hefyd. Dyma’r agweddau ar ddylunio rwy eisoes yn teimlo’n angerddol iawn amdanyn nhw ac y byddaf yn mynd â nhw i’m harfer proffesiynol.

The Lotus is a product that is designed to help alleviate the symptoms of anxiety when a sufferer may need it the most. It embodies a therapy called ‘grounding’ in order to help the user focus on the sensations emitted from the product rather than their anxious thoughts.

An exploded view of The Lotus depicts how the product will actually work and emit the sensations of heating and cooling, vibrations and colour changing light.
