BA (Hons) Ceramics

I produce wheel-thrown vessels that I create with a sense of spontaneity, capturing the feeling of movement and growth. These qualities are important to me, as they are qualities that resonate with the natural world, which is a great source of inspiration.

This inspiration is drawn from the natural landscape, which provides me with a means to produce work that captures the essence of the environment around me. I utilise locally sourced materials such as clay, minerals and ash that I use not only for aesthetic purposes, but I also feel that using foraged materials in this manner can instil the spirit or feel of a particular location into my work.

I am influenced by the ancient philosophy of wabi-sabi. This philosophy, born from Zen Buddhism and embraced by tea ceremony masters in 16th century Japan, sees beauty in the imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. These features are abundant in nature, and as a result, this philosophy is always at the forefront of my mind during the creation process, guiding me to produce simplistic, naturalistic forms that are reflective of the environment.

Surface texture is a prominent feature in my work, and tactility is an important factor in understanding it. My work attempts to create a connection between the environment and viewer, the handling and feel of the piece plays an important part in making this connection.


Rwy’n cynhyrchu dysglau sy’n cael eu taflu ar olwyn, sy’n cael eu creu gydag ymdeimlad byrfyfyr, gan gipio teimlad symudiad a thwf. Mae’r rhinweddau hyn yn bwysig i mi, gan eu bod yn rhinweddau sy’n atseinio gyda byd natur, sy’n ffynhonnell fawr ysbrydoliaeth.

Daw’r ysbrydoliaeth hon o’r tirlun naturiol, sy’n cynnig modd i mi gynhyrchu gwaith sy’n cipio hanfod yr amgylchedd o’m cwmpas. Rwy’n defnyddio deunyddiau o ffynonellau lleol fel clai, mwynau a lludw, nid yn unig at ddibenion esthetig, ond rwy’n teimlo hefyd y gall defnyddio deunyddiau wedi’u fforio yn y modd hwn ennyn ysbryd neu deimlad lleoliad arbennig i mewn i’m gwaith.

Mae athroniaeth hynafol wabi-sabi yn dylanwadu arnaf. Mae’r athroniaeth hon, sy’n tarddu o Fwdistiaeth Zen a’i harddel gan feistri’r seremoni de yn Siapan yr 16eg ganrif, yn gweld harddwch yn yr amherffaith, amharhaol ac anghyflawn. Mae’r nodweddion hyn yn doreithiog mewn natur, ac o ganlyniad, mae’r athroniaeth hon bob amser ar flaen fy meddwl yn ystod y broses greu, gan f’arwain i gynhyrchu ffurfiau syml, naturiolaidd sy’n adlewyrchu’r amgylchedd.

Mae gwead arwyneb yn nodwedd amlwg yn fy ngwaith, ac mae hydeimledd yn ffactor bwysig wrth ei ddeall. Mae fy ngwaith yn ceisio creu cysylltiad rhwng yr amgylchedd a’r gwyliwr, mae cyffwrdd a theimlo’r darn yn chwarae rhan bwysig mewn creu’r cysylltiad hwn.
