BA (Hons) Textiles

Sue Frayne

As a textile artist I am inspired to use a variety of techniques in my work, for example, shibori, foiling, applique, needle beading and using dissolvable plastic, but with a focus on hand embroidery, processes such as needle-lace, shashiko (Japanese darning) and embellishing with beads and found objects. I like to up-cycle fabrics in my work where I can.

For this project I have chosen to create my personal journey of transformation, which is about my beginnings of learning the art of belly-dance, starting with the lack of skills and confidence as defined in my first hanging, depicted as a torn and holey rag with a glimpse of gold beneath, showing the possibilities and glimmer of becoming a dancer.

The second hanging is as a phoenix rising as the learning process and practice skills evolve, and the confidence and knowledge increases, ending with the third hanging which depicts the transformation of dancing with ability and passion and in which one can forget oneself in the dance.

Gan fy mod yn artist tecstilau, rwy’n cael fy ysbrydoli i ddefnyddio amrywiaeth o dechnegau yn fy ngwaith, er enghraifft shibori, ffoilio, appliqué, gleinwaith a defnyddio plastig ymdoddadwy, ond gan ganolbwyntio ar frodwaith â’r llaw, prosesau megis les-nodwyddau, shashiko (trwsio Japaneeg) a harddu â gleiniau ac â phethau rwyf wedi cael hyd iddyn nhw. Rwy’n hoffi uwch-gylchu ffabrigau yn fy ngwaith lle y gallaf wneud hynny.

Ar gyfer y prosiect hwn, dewisais greu fy siwrnai o drawsnewid bersonol, sy’n sôn am ddechrau dysgu celfyddyd boladdawnsio, gan ddechrau â’r diffyg sgiliau a hyder sydd i’w weld yn fy ngwaith cyntaf ar ffurf rhacsyn tyllog wedi’i rwygo a chip o aur o dano sy’n dangos posibilrwydd a brith obaith o ddod yn ddawnsiwr.

Ffenics yn codi yw’r ail ddarn o waith wrth i’r broses ddysgu a’r sgiliau ymarfer esblygu, ac wrth i’r hyder a’r wybodaeth gynyddu, gan orffen â’r trydydd darn sy’n dangos y trawsnewid drwy ddawnsio â dawn ac angerdd pryd y gall person ymgolli yn y ddawns
