An important part of Chinese folk culture, the Chinese Zodiac represents twelve animals corresponding to the year in which people are born: the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Inspired by Chinese New Year paintings, I have learnt from their use of colour and animal forms to create work which is both vibrant and antique in feeling.

The zodiac signs are traditional symbols in Chinese art. Everyone has their own, and each animal has different meanings, so it can be used to reveal aspects of a persons character. People who are not familiar with the zodiac can find their own animal character from their birth year, having fun in the process of discovering and understanding Chinese culture.

For this exhibition I chose the poster form and product packaging forms to present the illustrations: I believe this can be a more intuitive and vivid way to reveal the artistic concepts within the images.

Mae’r Sidydd Tsieineeg yn rhan bwysig o’r diwydiant Tsieineaidd ac mae’n cynrychioli deuddeg anifail sy’n cyfateb i’r flwyddyn pryd y caiff pobl eu geni: y Llygoden Ffrengig, yr Ychen, y Teigr, y Gwningen, y Ddraig, y Neidr, y Ceffyl, yr Afr, y Mwnci. y Ceiliog, y Ci a’r Mochyn. Rwyf wedi dysgu oddi wrth baentiadau’r Flwyddyn Newydd Tsieineaidd am ddefnyddio lliw a ffurfiau anifeiliaid er mwyn creu gwaith sy’n llawn bywyd ac sy’n hynafol o ran teimlad.

Mae arwyddion y sidydd yn symbolau traddodiadol mewn celf Tsieineaidd. Mae ei arwydd ei hunan gan bob unigolyn ac mae ystyron gwahanol gan bob anifail, felly gellir ei ddefnyddio i ddatgelu agweddau o gymeriad person. Gall pobl sy’n anghyfarwydd â’r sidydd gael hyd i’w cymeriad anifail nhw eu hunain drwy ddefnyddio blwyddyn eu geni, gan gael hwyl ym mhroses ddarganfod a deall y diwylliant Tsieineaidd.

Ar gyfer yr arddangosfa hon, dewisais ffurf y poster a ffurfiau pecynnu cynhyrchion er mwyn cyflwyno’r darluniadau: rwy’n credu y gall hyn fod yn ffordd fwy greddfol a chlir i ddatgelu’r cysyniadau artistig o fewn y delweddau.
