Zoe Connelly

BA (Hons) Artist Designer Maker

As a Maker, I combine what I see as old and new craft. The driving principle of my work is the use of traditional materials informed by contemporary processes to enhance our understanding of materiality.

I explore materials such as bronze and ceramic to achieve particular forms according to their individual properties. This results in a juxtaposition of forms via new and traditional processes. To produce a structure that embodies many different elements, the techniques used compliment the difference in form and texture. To achieve the complex angles and joints, CAD Programs are a modern and useful tool for achieving the precise metal structures. Slip cast methods are used to create free form ceramic shapes, allowing the material to naturally form without much assistance. These two techniques create intersections between the planes and surfaces of the forms, further emphasising the contrast of the object.

In this collection I have produced a series of homeware vessels and objects. The artefacts will embody the contrast of geometric frames encasing and supporting a central polymorphic ceramic piece. The artefacts are based on the union of material and form and how they can be brought together in one singular object.

Gan fy mod yn Wneuthurwr, rwy’n cyfuno’r hyn sydd yn hen grefft â’r hyn sydd yn grefft newydd. Yr egwyddor sy’n gyrru fy ngwaith yw defnyddio deunyddiau traddodiadol wedi’u goleuo gan brosesau cyfoes i wella’n dealltwriaeth o fateroldeb.

Rwy’n archwilio deunyddiau megis efydd a cheramig er mwyn llunio rhai ffurfiau yn ôl eu priodweddau unigol. Canlyniad hyn yw ffurfiau wedi’u cyfosod drwy brosesau newydd a thraddodiadol. Er mwyn creu strwythur a fydd yn cynnwys llawer o elfennau gwahanol, bydd y technegau a ddefnyddir yn ategu’r gwahaniaeth o ran ffurf a gweadedd. Er mwyn sicrhau’r onglau a’r uniadau cymhleth, mae Rhaglenni CAD yn offeryn modern a defnyddiol ar gyfer llwyddo i greu’r strwythurau metel trachywir. Defnyddir dulliau castin slip i greu siapiau ceramig rhydd eu ffurf a fydd yn galluogi’r deunydd i ffurfio’n naturiol heb fawr o gymorth. Bydd y ddwy dechneg yma yn creu croestoriadau rhwng y planau ac arwynebau’r ffurfiau, gan bwysleisio ymhellach gyferbyniad y gwrthrych.

Yn y casgliad hwn rwyf wedi cynhyrchu cyfres o lestri a gwrthrychau ar gyfer y cartref. Mae’r arteffactau’n ymgorffori cyferbyniad y fframiau geometrig sy’n cwmpasu ac yn cynnal darn ceramig polymorffig yn y canol. Mae’r arteffactau’n seiliedig ar uno’r deunydd a’r ffurf, a’r ffordd y gellir dod â nhw at ei gilydd yn un gwrthrych.
