‘News worthy’ is a series of single image prints depicting the contrast between important world changing events that are happening now and stories that have replaced them in the media with more sensational news. The starting point was watching media coverage of the Australian bushfire crisis – in my view an extremely important event for the wellbeing of the natural world – and noticing how reporting on the subject more or less stopped in favour of stories about the Royal couple moving to Canada.

Subsequent investigations led me to discover other important current events that I and others were unaware of, or had considered either resolved or diminished, such as the Hong Kong riots, Pacific trash islands and the refugee crisis. The weight of these stories helped make my objective clear: I would work on lifting the veils cast by news media, which can trap people in a bubble of isolation, and hopefully help them see that there is much more going on behind what we are shown. The work warns people that if left ignored such events could escalate to the point where they affect all our lives and prolong human suffering. It’s about bringing an improved sense of perspective.

Mae ‘News worthy’ yn gyfres o brintiau â delwedd unigol sy’n dangos y cyferbyniad rhwng digwyddiadau pwysig sy’n newid y byd y maent yn digwydd nawr a storïau gyda newyddion mwy cyffrogarol sydd wedi disodli nhw yn y cyfryngau. Y man cychwyn oedd gwylio newyddion yn y cyfryngau o’r argyfwng tanau gwylltir yn Awstralia – digwyddiad pwysig iawn o ran llesiant y byd naturiol yn fy marn i – a chan sylwi sut y daeth adrodd ar y pwnc i ben fwy neu lai o blaid storïau am y cwpl Brenhinol yn symud i Ganada.

Arweiniodd ymchwiliadau dilynol ataf i’n darganfod digwyddiadau pwysig cyfredol eraill nad oeddwn i na phobl eraill yn ymwybodol ohonynt, neu yr ystyriwyd yr oeddent wedi’u datrys neu wedi cilio, megis terfysgoedd Hong Kong, ynysoedd sbwriel y Môr Tawel a’r argyfwng ffoaduriaid. Helpodd pwysiad y storïau hyn i wneud fy amcan yn glir: Byddwn yn gweithio ar godi’r llen a berir gan y cyfryngau newyddion, a all faglu pobl mewn swigen o unigedd, a gobeithio helpu nhw i weld bod llawer mwy yn mynd ymlaen y tu ôl i’r llen na’r hyn a ddangosir i ni. Mae’r gwaith yn rhybuddio pobl y gallai’r fath ddigwyddiadau, os cânt eu hanwybyddu o hyd, waethygu i’r pwynt pan fyddant yn effeithio ar ein bywydau i gyd a pheri i ddioddefaint dynol barhau. Mae’n ymwneud â chreu ymdeimlad gwell o bersbectif.
