BA (Hons) Animation

Alys Alexandra Jarden

I’ve been part of BA Animation for 3 years. After completing my BTEC in Northern Ireland, BA Animation at Cardiff Metropolitan University was a natural progression. The course has never tied us down but has encouraged us to reach for beyond the stars.

I have practiced different skills and worked with students from fine art to sports, constantly learning new techniques and strategies to help me improve my practice within my subject. I have experienced a wide range of roles, such as; director, producer, editor and animator, to better my understanding of the careers within the industry. Tim Burton has been my inspiration, with films like The Corpse Bride. Burton likes to show a connection between his characters and this got me thinking about my final film and how I could show that connection, or lack of it in my final animation, to bring light to a difficult subject like homelessness. I have worked with a lot of software, but TV Paint gave me the most freedom with my animation style.
Throughout the course I have had the opportunity to be class representative and it has given me the chance to be a part of the university’s community.

This has allowed me to connect with students all around the university who need help. But also, with prospective students and parents during open or interview days. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the course and I am grateful for the opportunities and lessons the course has offered me.

Dwi wedi bod yn rhan o’r cwrs BA Animeiddio ers tair blynedd. Ar ôl cwblhau fy BTEC yng Ngogledd Iwerddon, roedd BA Animeiddio ym Mhrifysgol Metropolitan Caerdydd yn gam naturiol. Nid yw’r cwrs wedi ein caethiwo erioed ond mae wedi ein hannog i geisio cyrraedd yr uchelfannau a thu hwnt.

Dwi wedi ymarfer sgiliau gwahanol ac wedi gweithio gyda myfyrwyr o gelfyddyd gain i chwaraeon, gan ddysgu technegau a strategaethau newydd yn gyson i fy helpu i wella fy ymarfer yn fy mhwnc i. Dwi wedi cael profiad o bob math o rolau, fel; cyfarwyddwr, cynhyrchydd, golygydd ac animeiddiwr, er mwyn gwella fy nealltwriaeth o’r gyrfaoedd yn y diwydiant. Tim Burton yw fy ysbrydoliaeth, gyda ffilmiau fel The Corpse Bride. Mae Burton yn hoffi dangos cysylltiad rhwng ei gymeriadau ac fe wnaeth hyn i mi feddwl am fy ffilm derfynol a sut gallwn i ddangos y cysylltiad hwnnw, neu ddiffyg cysylltiad, yn fy animeiddiad terfynol, i daflu goleuni ar bwnc anodd fel digartrefedd. Dwi wedi gweithio gyda llawer o feddalwedd, ond TV Paint roddodd y rhyddid mwyaf i mi gyda fy arddull animeiddio. Trwy gydol y cwrs dwi wedi cael y cyfle i fod yn gynrychiolydd dosbarth ac mae wedi rhoi cyfle i mi fod yn rhan o gymuned y brifysgol.

Mae hyn wedi fy ngalluogi i gysylltu â myfyrwyr o amgylch y brifysgol sydd angen cymorth. Ond hefyd, gyda darpar fyfyrwyr a rhieni yn ystod diwrnodau agored neu gyfweliadau. Dwi wedi mwynhau fy amser ar y cwrs yn fawr a dwi’n ddiolchgar am y cyfleoedd a’r gwersi y mae’r cwrs wedi’u cynnig i mi.

I am driven to create. Animation that inspires me most is the one that has me wonder how it has been done. I too want to create animation that makes people ponder on the technical and creative processes behind it. My animation is humorous, imaginative, colourful and...
