BA (Hons) Animation

For my final project, I decided that I wanted to base my film on the classic story of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. I wanted to tell a retelling but from a female perspective and to modernise the story by also adding an environmental theme; the witch’s world has been polluted and the story follows her, and her apprentices’ attempts to fix it. As well as the ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’, I was inspired by other classic and modern fantasy films such ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’, ‘Song of the Sea’ and ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’.
I have always believed that animation is the perfect form of storytelling for bringing fantastical stories to life. Animation is a medium that can bridge the gap between the fantastical and reality. I tried to reflect this idea through my choice of process of animation. To create the films backgrounds and props, I made the sets out of real, found objects and materials while the characters were created digitally. I also used stop-motion elements to create some of the effects in order to emulate the gothic, fantasy atmosphere of the films I was inspired by. My ambition for my career after university is to continue to work as an animator in the 2D animation industry

Yn ogystal â ‘Phrentis y Dewin’, ces i fy ysbrydoli gan ffilmiau ffantasi clasurol a modern eraill megis ‘Eira Wen a’r Saith Corrach’, ‘Song of the Sea’ a ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’.
Rwyf bob amser wedi credu bod animeiddio’n ffurf berffaith ar adrodd storïau i ddod â storïau ffantastig yn fyw. Mae animeiddio’n gyfrwng a all bontio’r bwlch rhwng y ffantastig a realiti. Ceisiais adlewyrchu hyn trwy fy newid o broses animeiddio. I greu cefndiroedd a phropiau’r ffilm, gwnes i’r setiau allan o wrthrychau a deunyddiau go iawn y daethpwyd o hyd iddynt a chrëwyd y cymeriadau’n ddigidol. Defnyddiais elfennau stop-symud hefyd i greu rhai o’r effeithiau er mwyn efelychu awyrgylch ffantasi gothig y ffilmiau wnaeth fy ysbrydoli. Fy uchelgais ar gyfer fy ngyrfa ar ôl y brifysgol yw parhau i weithio fel animeiddiwr yn y diwydiant animeiddio 2D.
