“A Portrait” is an animated documentary that is an exploration of an incredibly personal story of one mans journey emigrating from India to the UK in the 1960s. Although it is a deeply intimate story, it is one of many stories that relate to plenty of families and their history. It is also decidedly personal to me as it is the story of my grandfather and thus the beginnings of my own story. Even though I never got a chance to meet my grandfather, the decisions he made to come to the UK is one that has greatly impacted my life long before I realised and so I wanted to tell his story through animation. Much of the visuals and the themes portrayed throughout the film are ones that relate to my grandfather specifically including; ideas of family, travel and working in a different country. By combining the use of these themes and 2D digital and Stop Motion animation, the story is supported by carrying that sense of intimacy and vulnerability.

Mae “A Portrait” yn rhaglen ddogfen animeiddiedig sy’n archwiliad o stori anhygoel o bersonol am daith un dyn yn ymfudo o India i’r DU yn y 1960au. Er ei bod yn stori hynod agos atoch, mae’n un o nifer o straeon sy’n ymwneud â llawer iawn o deuluoedd a’u hanes. Mae hefyd yn arbennig o bersonol i mi, gan mai stori fy nhaid yw hi, ac o ganlyniad, gwreiddiau fy stori i fy hun. Er na chefais gyfle i gyfarfod â fy nhaid erioed, mae’r penderfyniadau a wnaeth i ddod i’r DU wedi effeithio’n fawr ar fy mywyd ymhell cyn i mi sylweddoli hynny, felly roeddwn eisiau adrodd ei stori ar ffurf animeiddio. Mae llawer o’r delweddau a’r themâu sy’n cael eu portreadu yn y ffilm yn rhai sy’n ymwneud â fy nhaid yn benodol, yn cynnwys; syniadau o deulu, teithio a gweithio mewn gwlad wahanol. Drwy gyfuno’r defnydd o’r themâu hyn gydag animeiddio digidol 2D a Stop-Symud, ategir y stori gan yr ymdeimlad o agosatrwydd a bregusrwydd sy’n gefn iddi.
