BSc Architectural Design & Technology

The focus of this course is on the development of a deep understanding of how buildings work and the techniques and materials needed to construct them. Working within the wider context of architecture the role of an architectural technologist is to help enable the realisation of a project alongside architects and other design professionals. The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) enabling graduates to progress to become fully chartered members of this profession.

The town of Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan is situated on the north coast of the Bristol Channel. The fifth largest town in Wales, it boasts a Blue Flag award winning beach Whitmore Bay and at the west end of the bay can be found Friars Point, a promontory jutting some half a kilometre into the sea. This year, the Final year Architectural Design and Technology students have designed a hotel to be located on Friars Point. The students’ brief was to design a mixed use building incorporating workspaces such as studios, craft workshops and apartments above which will takes full advantage of the panoramic views afforded by this wonderful location.

The work on display is only a snapshot of the students’ projects. Underpinning each is a substantial amount of development work including choice of structure, construction and material specification. There is also a requirement for students to produce a detail design that complies with statutory requirements and demonstrate an understanding of the environmental servicing requirements for their building.

Mae'r cwrs hwn yn canolbwyntio ar feithrin dealltwriaeth drylwyr o'r modd mae adeiladau'n gweithio a'r technegau a'r deunyddiau sydd eu hangen i'w hadeiladu. Gan weithio o fewn cyd-destun ehangach pensaernïaeth, rôl technolegydd pensaernïol yw helpu i gyflawni prosiect law yn llaw â phenseiri a gweithwyr dylunio proffesiynol eraill. Achredir y cwrs gan Sefydliad Siartredig y Technolegwyr Pensaernïol (CIAT) gan alluogi graddedigion i ddatblygu i ddod yn aelodau siartredig llawn o'r proffesiwn hwn.

Mae tref y Barri ym Mro Morgannwg wedi'i lleoli ar arfordir gogleddol Môr Hafren. Hon yw’r dref fwyaf ond pedair yng Nghymru ac mae'n cynnwys Bae Whitmore sydd wedi ennill statws Baner Las. Ym mhen gorllewinol y Bae mae Friars Point, pentir sy'n ymwthio tua hanner cilometr i'r môr. Eleni, mae myfyrwyr blwyddyn ola'r cwrs Dylunio a Thechnoleg Bensaernïol wedi cynllunio gwesty i'w leoli ar Friars Point. Y brîff oedd dylunio adeilad defnydd cymysg yn cynnwys gweithfannau fel stiwdios, gweithdai crefft a fflatiau uwchben sy'n elwa i'r eithaf ar olygfeydd panoramig y llecyn godidog hwn.

Dim ond blas ar brosiectau'r myfyrwyr yw'r gwaith sy'n cael ei arddangos. Mae llawer iawn o waith datblygu wrth wraidd pob un, gan gynnwys dewis strwythur, adeiladwaith a manyleb deunyddiau. Hefyd, mae'n ofynnol i fyfyrwyr greu dyluniad manwl sy'n cydymffurfio â gofynion statudol ac sy'n dangos dealltwriaeth o'r gofynion gwasanaethu amgylcheddol ar gyfer eu hadeilad.
